South Llano River SP… March 2022
-----I was really excited about this trip because I love the birds in this park. They actually have four bird blinds which are very well-maintained. You almost always see birds all through the park here. I decided to spend four nights here way back when I made my reservation, but then I forgot about that and thought it was only for three nights. It was just a few days ago that I discovered I actually had four. Anyway this is the last night, and I have put off doing this until now. So, because I am an extremely lazy person, this will be an abbreviated version of what went on here.
-----The ride over was wonderful. There were no winds to worry about the whole way, and the weather was perfect. Traffic wasn’t too bad once I got past Boerne.
-----When I arrived at the park, I noticed that they are really doing some major construction. Evidently, they’re getting a new headquarters building with a new entrance gate sometime next year. Right now, they had tractors and all kinds of stuff happening all over the place. You couldn’t even walk down to Lori’s blind because the path was closed.
-----Anyway, I checked in and drove to my site. It was extremely easy to back into because it is directly opposite the road that goes to the two big overflow parking lots. I just pulled into the road, put it in reverse, and backed into my spot. I got set up as quickly as I could, and took a hike over to the Acorn blind followed by the Juniper blind. I got lots of bird pictures. I got back to the trailer and looked at them on the computer and picked the ones I wanted to save to for the blog.
-----I started a new Korean drama called The Kings Affection. I watched that until I was tired and ready to go to bed.
-----The second day I started out by taking the overview hiking trail. The river trail and all of the turkey roosting area didn’t open until 10 because of the turkeys roosting. On the way back from the overlook, I stopped in at the Juniper blind and took some pictures. After that, I went into town to get gas and the few groceries that I needed to get.
-----When I got back to camp, I walked up to the juniper blind and took some pictures. Then, I took the service road to the Agarita blind. Next, I hiked to the day use area. From there I hiked the road to the parking lot at the trail head for Buck Lake. I looked around the lake for a while and then hiked up the hill to the Acorn blind. Finally, I dragged myself up to the camper, had dinner, cracked open a beer, and relaxed the rest of the evening watching my Korean series.
-----On Wednesday morning, I dug out my mini electric skillet and fried up some bacon and eggs for breakfast. Then, I decided to drive to Lori’s blind. After taking some pictures there, I drove over to the day use area. I was hoping to take a picture of a vermilion flycatcher, but I didn’t see one. I drove over to the parking lot by the Buck Lake and river trailheads. I parked and hiked the whole River Trail coming back to the parking lot on the Buck Lake Trail. I got back to the camper and relaxed for a while.
-----I hiked the camping loop until I got to the acorn blind and took some more pictures. Then I came back around the other half of the loop and hiked up to the juniper blind. After that, I was pretty much done for the day as far as hiking. I came back to the trailer and saw once again how filthy it was. I got my swiffer, sacrificed one of my wash cloths on it, filled up a bucket of water, and washed the back and starboard side of the camper by hand. It may not be the best job, but it sure looks a lot better than it did.
-----The evening in the trailer was pretty much the same as all the others. I sorted through pictures from the day, ate dinner, drank some beer and wine, watched my series, and went to bed.
-----This morning, I got up and fixed another round of bacon and eggs in my mini skillet. I woke up with a snore throat. It took a couple of warm cups of coffee to get rid of that. I did the hike around the RV loop to visit both of the nearby bird blinds. Then I got back to the camper and washed the front of it.
-----I went inside and saw that I really didn’t have enough time to take another hike. I had a zoom meeting for the Master Naturalist training committee at 12:30. So, I laid on the bed, set an alarm for 12:15, and tried to take a nap. Unfortunately, the alarm rang almost immediately. I had been looking at the big clock on the wall and didn’t realize that it had gotten about 45 minutes behind. I got up, and quickly scrambled to get ready for the zoom meeting. I had all the windows opened and stayed comfortable during the meeting. When it was over, I felt kind of hot. I looked at the thermometer and the temperature in the trailer was eighty-nine degrees. I decided to close the windows and put the AC on. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn it on before leaving the camper.
----- I walked along the park road past headquarters to the Agarita blind. Then I took that service road until I got back to the Juniper blind. I was about to go to the trailer and call it a day when I realized I hadn’t met my step goal yet. So, I looped around the RV loop to get to the Acorn blind for a while. Once I had enough points and pictures, I got back to the trailer. When I stepped in, I about passed out from the heat. The temperature had risen to eighty-nine degrees. I put the AC on, pointed the fan at myself, and sat there in my underwear selecting the pictures from the day that I would post to my blog when I got back to San Antonio. I was really woozy and kept nodding off. Once, I must have kept my finger on a key forever, because the screen indicated it was loading the next photo, but was actually frozen. I finally realized that I put the AC on the "fan only" setting. Once I actually had it in the right position, it cooled down pretty fast.
----- I went ahead and ate my dinner before doing some of the normal camp departure break down things that I usually do the night before I leave. Go back a few blog posts. I listed them somewhere. Anyway, all I have to do now is watch TV have some drinks and relax.
